Child Abuse and Neglect In an Educational Setting (Virtual Training, January 26, 2022)

Professionals who come into contact with children in the course of their everyday activities play a vital role in identifying and assisting children who are victims of abuse or neglect. As a result, New York State law requires these professionals to take a course on identifying and reporting child abuse and neglect so that they are informed of the law and their responsibility. However, due to child abuse cases perpetrated by school staff falling through the cracks, The New York State Department of Education recently made updates to Education Law 23-B Reporting Requirements. These updates have forth new policies and procedures when reporting suspected cases of child abuse by a school staff person. Policies such as who is considered a mandated reporter in a school setting, duties of employees and administrators, confidentiality of records, and proper steps to report abuse. This two-hour training teaches mandated reporters how to identify signs of abuse and neglect and understand their legal obligations for reporting. Through lecture, discussion, and practical application, participants will leave the workshop better prepared to handle child protection issues that arises. Participants will receive two certificates of completions, both recognized by the New York State Department of Education.
