Any organization that works with children and youth should develop and adopt best practice policies and procedures addressing the protection and safety of the young people under its care. Minimal legal compliance is not enough to reach current best practice standards. Organizations should strive to establish practices that go beyond compliance to ensure that everything is being done to create a safe and risk-free environment for children and youth. The NYSPCC can assist youth serving organizations by thoroughly reviewing their current child safety policies and practices, assessing where current practices can be strengthened and improved, and making recommendations for bringing the organization up to current best practice standards.
